Orthopedic Massage
Orthopedic Massage uses a technique called wave mobilization. The practitioner imagines his or her hands as similar to an ocean wave, finding the place of restriction, applying deep pressure, and then coming away with a lighter touch. This technique is useful for tricking the tissue out of a hypertonic state, allowing for deep relaxation. To feel the deep work but then have it followed by a lighter touch allows the autonomic nervous system a chance to calm down. Essentially the body is caught off guard and the fight or flight mechanism is quieted down. This technique also looks at a person’s posture. Becoming aware of how he or she is sitting, standing, or walking and correcting that posture is a great first step in living pain free.
